Dawnstone

Privacy

Last updated: October 16, 2026

Dawnstone is built by Dongjun Kim, an independent developer, and is designed to be private by default. We collect the minimum data needed to operate the app and never sell or share your information with advertisers. This policy covers the Dawnstone apps on Apple devices (App Store) and on Android (Google Play).

What we collect

On your device: Dawnstone stores your settings, notification preferences, which cards you've seen, and the lines you write in One Line. This data is kept on your device and is not transmitted to our servers.

iCloud (Apple devices): To stay consistent across your Apple devices and after a reinstall, the app syncs a randomly generated app identifier, your seen-card history, and your One Line entries through your own iCloud account (iCloud key-value storage). Apple stores this data under your Apple ID; we cannot access it. If iCloud is turned off, it stays on the device. The Apple Watch app receives its data from your paired iPhone.

Android backup: On Android, the app's data (settings and One Line entries) is included in Android's automatic backup to your Google account when backup is turned on in your device settings. Google stores that backup; we cannot access it.

Anonymous analytics: We use PostHog (servers in the United States) in both apps to understand how features are used — which screens and onboarding steps are opened, paywall views and purchase outcomes (product, displayed price, and whether the purchase completed), and feature use such as sharing a card or setting a wallpaper. These events are tied to a randomly generated anonymous identifier, not to your Apple ID, Google account, email, or name. They include a card's ID but never the text of your One Line entries (only a length range). On Apple devices the identifier is the random ID synced through iCloud; on Android it is created by the analytics library and stays on that device. As with any internet request, PostHog receives the connection's IP address and basic technical details (device model, operating system and app version, language), and may derive an approximate country or region from the IP address.

Subscription data (Apple devices): If you purchase Pro on an Apple device, RevenueCat (our subscription provider) processes the transaction and tracks subscription status. This is necessary to grant Pro access across your devices. RevenueCat receives a randomly generated anonymous identifier — never your Apple ID directly.

Purchases on Android: If you purchase Pro on Android, the purchase is handled by Google Play Billing directly; RevenueCat is not used on Android. The app asks Google Play for your purchase status and keeps a “Pro active” flag on the device.

Crash diagnostics: On Apple devices, we may receive crash reports through Apple's standard diagnostic system if you have crash reporting enabled in your device settings. On Android, Google Play may give us crash and performance statistics (Android vitals) from devices whose users have chosen to share usage and diagnostics data with Google. These reports contain no personal identifiers.

On-device AI (Apple devices): One Line's optional AI features run only on Apple's on-device model. Your text is not sent to us or to any AI service. The Android app has no AI features.

What we don't collect

  • Your name, email, or phone number
  • Your precise location (the app never asks for location access)
  • Your contacts, photos, or other device data
  • Any data shared with advertisers or data brokers
  • Your advertising ID, or cross-app or cross-site tracking identifiers (the Android app removes the advertising ID permission)

Apple and Google receive standard purchase information

When you purchase Pro through the App Store, Apple processes the payment using your Apple ID; when you purchase through Google Play, Google processes it using your Google account. Their privacy policies govern those transactions. We never see your credit card or Apple ID, and the app does not receive your Google account details.

Notifications, widgets, and wallpaper

Daily reminders are scheduled on your device; there is no push server. Widgets and wallpaper images are drawn on your device from the cards bundled with the app. On Android, the app sets the lock-screen wallpaper itself when you ask it to; on iPhone, it saves the image to your Photos library with your permission.

Children

Dawnstone is rated 4+ on the App Store and Everyone on Google Play, and contains no objectionable content. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, regardless of age, beyond the anonymous analytics described above.

Data deletion

All on-device data is removed when you delete the app. Data synced through iCloud or saved in an Android backup is managed in your iCloud or Google account settings. Anonymous analytics tied to the random identifier remain in our aggregate analytics dataset but cannot be linked back to you. If you want subscription data fully removed from RevenueCat, email us — see Support. Android purchase records are kept by Google Play under Google's privacy policy.

Changes to this policy

If we change anything material about data collection, we'll update this page and note the change date at the top.

October 16, 2026: added the Android app (Google Play Billing, analytics, backup, crash statistics) and described iCloud sync and on-device AI on Apple devices.
